Footings

Footings transfer structural loads to the supporting soil. The design involves checking soil pressure, shear (one-way and two-way), and flexure.

Types of Footings

• Wall Footings: Continuous strip footings supporting walls.
• Isolated Footings: Individual footings supporting single columns.
• Combined Footings: Supporting two or more columns.
• Mat Foundations: Supporting multiple columns and walls over a large area.

Design Checks

1. Soil Pressure: $q_a \geq q_{net}$.
2. One-Way Shear (Beam Shear): Critical section at distance $d$ from face of support.
3. Two-Way Shear (Punching Shear): Critical section at distance $d/2$ from face of support.
4. Flexure: Critical section at face of support.
