Serviceability

Serviceability

Serviceability limit states ensure that a structure performs satisfactorily under service loads, avoiding excessive deflection, cracking, or vibration.

Deflection

Deflection calculations involve determining the effective moment of inertia (IeI_e) which accounts for the cracked section properties.

Ie=(McrMa)3Ig+[1(McrMa)3]IcrIgI_e = (\frac{M_{cr}}{M_a})^3 I_g + [1 - (\frac{M_{cr}}{M_a})^3] I_{cr} \leq I_g

Where:

  • McrM_{cr}: Cracking moment.
  • MaM_a: Maximum service moment at the stage deflection is computed.
  • IgI_g: Gross moment of inertia.
  • IcrI_{cr}: Cracked moment of inertia.

Cracking

Crack control is primarily achieved by proper detailing of reinforcement (spacing and cover).
