Consider Louis Kahn's Kimbell Art Museum. The galleries use a brilliant top-lighting strategy: continuous cycloid barrel vaults with a narrow slit at the apex. Suspended directly below the slit are curved aluminum reflectors that block the harsh direct Texas sun, bouncing it back against the concrete vault. The result is a soft, silvery, diffuse light that perfectly illuminates the artwork without damaging it.
