Example
The AT&T Building (now 550 Madison Avenue) in New York by Philip Johnson. It is a standard Modernist skyscraper shaft but is topped with a massive, ornamental "Chippendale" pediment, playfully referencing historical furniture design on a monumental scale.
Example
The most famous built example of Metabolism is the Nakagin Capsule Tower in Tokyo (designed by Kisho Kurokawa). It featured two concrete central towers housing utilities and elevators, to which 140 prefabricated, cube-like living capsules were bolted. The theory was that the capsules would be replaced every 25 years, though in reality, this proved economically unfeasible.
